Any group with so uncompromising a name as The Beatles has much to overcome to win recognition from those who have little interest in Hit Parade music. Why did they choose the name? John Lennon, their leader, say's (and we quote) 'It came to us in a flaming pie and spoke these words: "From this day on you are The Beatles with an A"'
In spite of this pie in the sky, their name has not, until recently, been known to the record-buying public. But with the release of their first disc Love Me Do the name has spread from their native Liverpool and from those dispersed towns where the group had appeared with top-liners.
Formed in 1956 during the skiffle boom, the original Beatles Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison weathered the pop styles that followed, writing much of their own material. They were joined last year by drummer Ringo Starr.
Of the group's first recording, their press representative wrote that 'they' are backed by six years of maturing musical notions and solid practical experience which has taken them from Liverpool ballrooms to Hamburg night clubs, from church hall hops to stints in Liverpool Chinatown.'
This morning The Beatles broadcast in Saturday Club, and you can hear them again on
Tuesday in The Talent Spot.
